The possibility of paralysis as a precautionary measure against the overwhelming and human urge to destroy the “other” cannot be discounted. While the mantis is easily the most human-like arthropod, there exists a deeply rooted fear of otherness that is generated when a person encounters such a creature.Ĭould this human reaction explain the common experience of paralysis that Mantis beings induce when contacting Earthlings? Insects embody a quality of “otherness” in their demeanor and appearance, and this lack of mammalian attributes tends to alienate and upset human beings, leading to the death of many an Earth insect. It is even said that the mantis created the moon as a guide for hunters by throwing a gallbladder into the sky. The Khoisan tribe of Africa specifically regard the mantis as the first living creature upon the Earth, who granted life to animals and humans, inventing language and bringing fire to the people. Insect beings appear within mythologies throughout the world, including Native American and African folklore. Some researchers have considered Mantids as a possible example of an early form of intelligent life from planet Earth itself, but this is only one theory of the origin of these creatures. While the Mantis is not as widely reported as the Grey or Nordic alien, it still holds an important role within many extraterrestrial contact scenarios. These beings appear within many abduction scenarios, with abductees reporting the ominous presence of these entities looming over their beds as they wake in the dead of night.
As yet, these species appear to be confined to artificial humanised gardened areas but call for more attention to the problem of biological invasions and the need for better bio-security measures for the conservation of natural ecosystems.In the absence of recent revisionary work on the Mantodea of Portugal and given the need to provide an accessible identification tool, both a checklist and a key to species are provided for all species in the country.Mantis aliens are perhaps the most mysterious and unsettling of all extraterrestrial creatures. Analysis of specimens shows that they belong to two Afrotropical mantids: Miomantis caffra Saussure, 1871 and Miomantis paykullii Stal, 1871, thus raising the number of known species in Europe to 39 and in Portugal to 11.While these are remarkable findings, they also represent the first alien mantis species recorded from this continent. The recent growing interest on the Mantodea fauna of southern Europe and Portugal in particular, has enabled the discovery of two geographically separated populations of hitherto unknown species in Europe.
